Faun SLT-56 is a German, heavy, wheeled tractor unit from the post-war and modern period. The first copies of this vehicle appeared in the second half of the 1980s, and in 1989 the Bundeswehr decided to purchase 49 such tractors. The vehicle is powered by a single KHD-12 engine with a capacity of 19.1 liters and 525 hp.
The Faun SLT-56 was developed for the needs of the Bundeswehr for the transport of the Leopard 2 MBTs. The new tractor is also the successor of the previously used SLT-50 vehicle and, despite its external similarity, differs from it on many levels. First of all, it has a different engine and drive train. It also has a higher load capacity and the reliability has been decidedly improved. Very often, however, the SLT-56 uses an older type of semi-trailers (colloquial name: Elephant). In 1993, a small number of these heavy truck tractors were brought into service with the 1993 United Nations Mission in Somalia.
